The Risks of Fasting Associated With Cardiac Arrhythmia
The heart provides blood flow to the rest of the body by pumping in a normal, regular rhythm. This rhythm depends on the stability of serum electrolytes such as potassium, calcium and others. Electrolytes are stable, naturally occurring elements and chemical salts that we consume every day in our diets and/or through medications. Temporary changes in the blood levels of specific electrolytes may increase the likelihood that people with cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats) experience more frequent and/or worsening symptoms. In some extreme cases, these events can be fatal. Fasting also alters the way many medications used to treat cardiac conditions are absorbed. People who suffer from this form of heart disease must discuss their interest in fasting with their physician. Unless supervised, in this setting these issues make fasting an extremely risky practice. (Click here) for more information on cardiac disease and arrhythmia
